Syria's flirtation with chemical weapons suggests that Bashar al-Assad may be losing his grip on events

مداعبة سورية بأسلحة كيماوية يشير إلى أن بشار بدأ يفقد قبضته على الأحداث

When President Barack Obama publicly warned Syria’s regime against the “tragic mistake” of using chemical weapons last month, many asked why America was suddenly sounding the alarm. It seemed that Syria’s army might have taken some concrete steps towards preparing to gas its enemies.

Assad and the U.S. are blind to reality in Syria

الأسد والولايات المتحدة عميان عن الواقع في سورية

SYRIAN PRESIDENT Bashar al-Assad delivered a speech Sunday that had the virtue, at least, of offering clarity. No, he insisted, he would not step down. He would not negotiate with the rebels who control much of the countryside and parts of major cities. He would not consider the compromise “transition” proposal being pedaled by a U.N. envoy with the backing of his ally Russia, as well as the United States. Instead, he said, he would fight to the end against “enemies of God and puppets of the West.”

Wet, wintry weather brings fresh misery to Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey

الرطوبة والطقس الشتوي يجلب شقاء جديد للاجئين السوريين في الأردن ولبنان وتركيا

ZAATARI, Jordan — A winter storm is magnifying the misery for tens of thousands of Syrians fleeing the country’s civil war, turning a refugee camp into a muddy swamp where howling winds tore down tents and exposed the displaced residents to freezing temperatures. Some frustrated refugees at a camp in Zaatari, where about 50,000 are sheltered, attacked aid workers with sticks and stones after the tents collapsed in 35 mph (60 kph) winds, said Ghazi Sarhan, spokesman for the Jordanian charity that helps run the camp. Police said seven Jordanian workers were injured.
