American troops and missile batteries arrive on Syrian border

القوات الامريكية وبطاريات الصواريخ تصل إلى الحدود السورية

After weeks in which events in Syria took a back seat to the US presidential election campaign, Washington confirmed that the first US troops and equipment had arrived at Incirlik, an air-base in south-eastern Turkey.Other western troops were photographed by Turkish media landing at Gaziantep airport, near the Syrian border and a short drive from Aleppo, the country's biggest city.

Rebel bomb attack on petrol station kills 11 Syrians in loyalist area

المتمردون يهاجمون بالقنابل محطة وقود ومقتل 11 سوري في منطقة موالية (للنظام)

Two children were among the dead in the attack which occurred late Thursday in the Massaken Barzeh district, the Britain-based watchdog said.The official SANA news agency said the bomb struck a petrol station near a hospital and that it also wounded many civilians.

BEIRUT — Syrian ground and air forces bombarded rebel strongholds on the outskirts of Damascus and other areas around the country Friday while anti-government forces targeted a military post near the capital with a car bomb, activists said.The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said warplanes targeted neighborhoods around the capital including Douma, which troops have been trying to recapture for weeks. Two air raids there Thursday killed 12 people and caused heavy damage.

WASHINGTON—U.S. officials said the Syrian military has fired at least four short-range Iranian-made ballistic missiles at rebel positions in recent days, raising alarms in Washington that the Assad regime may be turning to deadlier weapons to hold on to power.The Syrian military fired a few of the Iranian-made missiles, known as Fateh-110s, late last month. Officials said the additional salvos fired this week at rebel targets near the city of Homs suggest that Tehran may be stepping up its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrian regime captures al-Qa'ida chief's brother on 'aid mission'

The brother of the head of al-Qa’ida is reported to have been captured by regime forces in Syria. Mohamed al-Zawahiri is said to have been seized in Deraa in the south-west where he was meeting opposition activists.Rebel fighters insisted Mohamed al-Zawahiri was engaged on a humanitarian mission and had not been involved in violent acts. They also claimed that he had, in fact, proposed a local truce to enable aid to get through.
