Moves to form Syrian opposition look set to end in failure

Moves to form a credible alternative to Syria's Assad regime look set to end in failure, with the main opposition bloc refusing to endorse a broad-based government in waiting or contribute to how it might take shape.

The Syrian National Council, supported by opponents of Assad earlier in the uprising and more recently derided, continued to stall over a response to the formation of an umbrella group that aims to forge stronger alliances with groups inside Syria .

Syrian opposition leader calls for foreign help without conditions

The newly elected leader of Syria's main opposition bloc has said that the international community should support those trying to topple President Bashar al-Assad's regime without any conditions and not link aid to an overhaul of the opposition leadership.

George Sabra, head of the Syrian National Council, said he and other opposition figures are disappointed with foreign backers. "Unfortunately, we get nothing from them, except some statements, some encouragement" while Assad's allies "give the regime everything," Sabra told The Associated Press on the sidelines of a weeklong SNC conference in the Qatari capital of Doha.

Twin blasts strike Syrian city of Daraa

Two large explosions shook Syria 's southern city of Daraa today, causing multiple casualties and heavy material damage, the country's state-run news agency and activists said.

The Sana agency did not immediately give further information or say what the target of the explosions was, but the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said the blasts went off near a branch of the country's military intelligence in Daraa.

David Cameron surprises allies with suggestion of arming Syrian rebels

Downing Street is floating striking proposals to alter the European Union's embargo on Syria to allow arming the rebels, under the pretext of recognising their "right to self-defence". Rebels are demanding a shopping list of weapons they say will allow them to "finish the job" of removing President Bashar al-Assad.

But with rebel groups openly admitting to executing prisoners, and radical Islamist groups taking more prominent roles in the fighting, Mr Cameron's initiative has caused surprise in the US state department and elsewhere.

Christian elected as head of Syrian National Council

George Sabra was elected the leader of a body that has come under heavy criticism from international allies for being both ineffective in the fight against the Syrian regime, and too much under the sway of the Muslim Brotherhood.

“The choice of a Christian as leader proves that there is truth when the Syrian people shout that they are one, one, one. It shows that we are not sectarian,” said Mr Sabra, speaking from the plush, heavily decorated conference room in Doha where the voting took place.

Syrian National Council Resists Unification

DOHA, Qatar — The Syrian National Council, the largest antigovernment coalition, resisted an initiative on Saturday that would place all opponents of the government under one umbrella — a streamlining sought by foreign backers who fear that the bickering exile movements are being eclipsed by events on the battlegrounds inSyria.

Southern Syria Sees Deadly Blasts

BEIRUT —Suicide car bombings ripped through a Syrian government base in a southern city on Saturday, killing at least 20 soldiers, an opposition group said, the latest in a series of explosions targeting regime forces and symbols of state security across the country.

The explosions in Daraa were followed by clashes between regime forces and rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad, activists said.

AP Interview: New head of Syria ’s opposition group urges West to send aid without strings

DOHA , Qatar — The newly elected leader of Syria ’s main opposition bloc in exile struck a combative tone Saturday, saying international inaction rather than divisions among anti-regime groups are to blame for the inability to end the bloodshed in Syria .

George Sabra, the new head of the Syrian National Council, told The Associated Press in an interview that the international community should support those trying to topple President Bashar Assad without strings attached, rather than linking aid to an overhaul of the opposition leadership.
