Syrian rebels advance into Aleppo

After more than two months of near stalemate, rebel groups have advanced into three government-held areas of central Aleppo .

This was the first time that territory has changed hands since mid-August but it did not appear to mark a decisive shift in the battle for Syria's second city, where a lull in fighting is expected to begin tomorrow.

A powerful car bomb exploded in Damascus and scattered fighting broke out in several areas across Syria Friday, quickly dashing any hopes that a shaky holiday cease-fire would hold for four days.

But taking advantage of a lull in fighting in the hours after the truce which went into effect Friday morning, thousands of people took to the streets in several towns and cities, calling for President Bashar Assad's ouster in the largest anti-regime protests in months.

Hezbollah crosses Syrian border with bloody assault on Assad's enemies

 It is a fortnight since Amr Al Ali was smuggled unconscious over the border to Lebanon , with a graze to his lips from a ricocheting bullet and deep wounds in his legs and hands after an exploding rocket turned a breeze-block wall in front of him into concrete shrapnel.

Yet the Free Syrian Army fighter says his enemy was not President Bashar al-Assad's soldiers, but militants from the armed wing of the Shia movement Hezbollah, a long-standing ally of Iran and the Syrian regime.

Saudi Arabia expels workers at Syrian consulate

"The steps were taken based on the public interest as their conduct ... was incompatible with the consular duties associated with their work," said a Foreign Ministry statement carried by state media, without giving further details.

The conservative Islamic kingdom, which this week is hosting Islam's annual haj pilgrimage in Mecca , closed its embassy in Damascus in March, a month after expelling Syria 's ambassador to Riyadh

Syria : Three killed as ceasefire period begins

سوريا : ثلاثة قتلى في بداية فترة وقف إطلاق النار

Three people were killed by tank fire and snipers in Harasta, a town near Damascus , activists said.

The Syrian military had said it would hold fire on Friday morning following an appeal by international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi for a pause in fighting which has killed 32,000 people and which threatens to draw regional powers into the conflict.
