Up to 28,000 Syrians have 'disappeared' since uprising began

يصل عدد المفقودين إلى 28000 سوري منذ بدء الإنتفاضة

Up to 28,000 Syrians have disappeared over the past 19 months, with civilians snatched from the streets or forcibly abducted by government troops or security forces, human rights groups say.

Relatives had been unable to discover the fate of their loved ones. Many of those abducted were almost certainly dead, while others were alive and being held in Syrian prisons or secret detention centres where they were tortured, the groups claimed.

Civil war prompts tenfold rise in Syrians claiming asylum in UK

منذ بدء الحرب الأهلية ارتفع عدد طالبي اللجوء السوريين إلى عشرة أضعاف

The number of Syrians claiming asylum in Britain has soared since civil war gripped the country last year.

Barely 10 a month sought refuge in the UK before President Bashar al-Assad's regime started turning its weaponry on protesters. The trickle has now turned into a stream of about 100 a month, placing fresh pressure on refugee support services and forcing the Home Office to issue new guidance to immigration officers dealing with Syrian asylum-seekers.

Fears for thousands of missing Syrians

إختفاء الآلآف السوريين تثير المخاوف

Employing a tactic reminiscent of the enforced disappearances of Stalin’s Russia or Idi Amin’s Uganda, agents of the regime are seizing suspected opposition sympathisers from their homes or even off the street, according to campaigners.

Avaaz, a global campaign network that aids opposition activists in Syria, said the names of 18,000 missing people had been collected, along with a further 10,000 cases of unnamed victims spirited into secret detention and torture facilities.

Among the Snipers of Aleppo

بين القناصة من حلب

IN the Syrian city of Aleppo, there are neighborhoods that are almost entirely abandoned; blocks of buildings with their facades blown off, apartments open to the street; and other buildings, intact but empty, their curtains billowing out the windows. Broken water pipes have turned roads into debris-clogged rivers. And tribes of cats stalk around like predators; every now and then you pass one lying dead on the ground, its body torn apart by sniper fire.
